Prices

Every price, on the page

No "from", no booking fee, no card fee, no charge for the first call. The DVSA's own test fees are listed too, so you can see what is mine and what is theirs.

These figures are placeholders. They were modelled on Manchester market rates and have not been set by Carl. Do not publish this page without changing them, or you will be quoting prices you have not agreed to.

What is not included

The DVSA theory test (£23) and practical test (£62 weekday, £75 evening and weekend) are paid directly to the DVSA, never to me. Anyone offering to book a test for you at a markup is reselling something you can buy yourself in five minutes on GOV.UK.

Cancellations

Free with 48 hours' notice. Inside 48 hours the lesson is charged at half rate; inside 12 hours it is charged in full. If I cancel on you for any reason other than weather neither of us can drive in, the next lesson is free.

Paying

Bank transfer before the lesson, or cash at the end. No card machine, no app, no subscription, no joining fee, and no charge for the first phone call.

Price rises

If you hold a block booking, the rate you paid is the rate you keep, however long the block takes you to use.

The honest version

What learning to drive really costs

Lesson rates are the part people compare. They are not the part that decides the total.

Provisional licenceOnce, online at DVLA. £43 if you apply by post.£34
Theory test£23 per attempt£23
Practical test£62 weekday, £75 evening or weekend£62
45 hours of lessonsThe DVSA average, at the block-of-20 rate£1,485
Test-day packageWarm-up, car, lift home£110
Realistic total from scratchAssuming one theory attempt and one practical attempt≈ £1,714

Two practical attempts and ten extra hours is nearer £2,100. Anyone quoting you a figure under a thousand is quoting the lessons and leaving out everything else. worked from the placeholder rates above

Want a figure for your situation?

Tell me what driving you have done and what your deadline is, and I will give you a range rather than a sales number.

No charge for the first call, and no sales pitch on it. If I am not the right instructor for you I will say so.
